Common Types of Ultrasonic Couplant

Water-based solutions:
These are often used for general-purpose inspections and are compatible with most materials. They are easy to clean and provide good acoustic transmission.

Oil-based coupling agents:
Ideal for high-temperature applications or when water is not suitable. Oil-based couplants often provide better consistency in adhesion but can be more challenging to clean off after testing.

Paste-like couplants:
These are particularly useful for rough surfaces or challenging geometries, as they can fll in gaps and ensure full contact between the transducer and the test material.

Uses of Ultrasonic Couplant
Ultrasonic Couplant also called a 'contact material', can be used to reduce noise in your experiment. You might think that having conductive contact between the physical object you are experimenting on and your instrument would make for better data.
It's possible (if not common) for this conductive connection to cause another problem: cross-sensitivity. The term 'cross-sensitivity' refers to an unwanted coupling between signals which can result in spurious or undesirable responses.
Cross-sensitivity usually occurs when there is electrical continuity between the objects you're measuring (or their environment), causing current to flow through multiple parts of the circuit at once.

Precautions for Using Ultrasonic Couplant
Inspection volume
If you are inspecting a lot of parts, it is more important to select a couplant that is easy to apply and remove than if you are only inspecting a few parts since application and removal can impact the overall time spent on a UT inspection.
Corrosion protection
Some ultrasonic couplants are better than others at corrosion inhibition, especially over longer periods of time so make sure to use a couplant that meets your corrosion protection needs.
Store couplant in the original container.
Store out of direct sunlight.
Keep container closed when not in use.
Never put unused couplant back into the original storage container.
Refer to Safety Data Sheet for additional storage instructions.
