Electrodes are at the heart of all electrical therapy branches. Their purpose is to facilitate the transmission of electrical signals into the body. This is achieved by ensuring good electrical contact between the patient's skin and the device generating the electrical signals. The device can be a TENS machine, EMS equipment, ultrasound device, etc. When selecting the right electrodes, consider the following points:
Size and Shape
The correct size for any specific application depends on the body area being treated, with the main goal being to ensure good electrical contact on the electrode's surface. You may find that smaller electrode pads work better for contoured body parts. The shape of the electrical pads is also crucial for ensuring good electrical contact. Depending on the specific treatment area, round electrodes may be better than square ones, and vice versa. The most common sizes and shapes of TENS unit pads are:
- 2" x 2" Square – This is a great choice for localized pain control; the small electrode size means it can fit snugly against the skin, even in highly contoured areas like the elbow or knee.
- 2" Round – Like the 2" x 2" square electrodes, these are excellent for targeting small pain areas. This size of round or oval TENS machine pads can even fit more closely to pronounced contours compared to the square size.
- Butterfly-Shaped Electrodes** – Suitable for larger flat areas that are less easily contoured, such as effectively treating lower back pain.
- Rectangular Electrodes** – These large electrodes are suitable for areas such as the spine and lower back. They can also be used on parts like the calves or thighs, easily wrapping around these areas while providing optimal coverage and an excellent fit.
Other Considerations
In addition to the correct size and shape, you should also aim to select TENS electrodes with the following features:
- Excellent adhesion and skin conformity;
- Reusability;
- Fabric backing that helps the electrode conform better to skin contours;
- A thick hydrogel layer that makes the electrode easy to secure and provides good current distribution;
- A robust connection mechanism between the electrode and the stim device. The two most popular options are "tail fiber" connections and "snap" connections.
- If you have sensitive skin or a history of latex allergies, you can opt for latex-free electrodes.
